October 2010

ARTS. OPEN OCTOBER. 31 Days of Art and Soul.
October offers a particularly diverse slate of arts events, festivals and activities providing an appropriate  kick off opportunity for the awareness campaign. And this year’s PSA campaign will set the stage for the first annual arts festival for Sacramento in October, 2011.

This new campaign is a twist on the continuing marketing campaign the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, Sacramento’s local arts agency devoted to advancing community through arts and culture.  Launched a year ago and designed to keep the arts in the public eye, ARTS. OPEN DAILY, has been applauded to date.  This fall, the Arts Commission and the Sacramento Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (SCVB), with printing support from the Sacramento News & Review (SN&R),  partnered to bring Sacramento the new October campaign.

Mayor Kevin Johnson recently commented on the festival concept,  “I have seen buses, taxi cabs and downtown banners advertising Arts Open October and it’s a great campaign. I encourage everyone to come out and see it. An arts and cultural festival celebrating all of Sacramento’s diversity is an established goal of the For Arts’ Sake campaign and we look for it to be realized in October 2011.”

The focus of the PSA campaign is that the arts are alive in Sacramento, as exemplified by the many rich offerings in October. The call to action for up-to-date arts and cultural information is the web site Sacramento365.com. This comprehensive online calendar was launched by the Arts Commission and the SCVB in October 2008. Its popularity has grown steadily with over 3-million hits in a month.

The business partnerships created for this year's PSA campaign and future festival stem from existing relationships between like-minded businesses. The Arts Commission and SCVB share a similar desire to engage both residents and visitors alike in the many cultural opportunities in this region. Early in 2011, look for a special listing for the arts festival on the Sacramento365.com website, presenting an opportunity for businesses and individuals to participate and up-to-date information on the planning process.

An Evening with David Garibaldi
Organizers of the 11th annual Sacramento Film & Music Festival are proud to announce a very special evening with local performance artist David Garibaldi. David's star is rising quickly as he is dazzling world-wide audiences with his exciting live shows - and his art is appearing on everything from iPhone covers to posters and prints to apparel. Audiences will be treated to a rare evening of up close and personal access to David Garibaldi and his art through the world premiere screening of the documentary film about David's artistic path Walking Dreams (directed by Chad Ross), followed by a live performance of his brilliant painting and awe-inspiring talent.

As an appreciative nod to the Arts Commission, the local arts endeavor that supported him at the beginning of his career, a charity auction will be held for the paintings that David creates that night, with 50% of proceeds going to the benefit the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission through their non-profit ‘Friends of the Arts Commission’. This is an historic event; inspirational and entertaining, and an artistic evening you will not want to miss – plus it offers an exciting way to support the arts too!

Please note: Anyone interested in bidding on Garibaldi’s art, please email lpederson@yahoo.com to  get details on that exciting opportunity.

Advance tickets for the event are available here.

Million Plates Campaign for the Arts

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver joined the California Arts Council, The Creative Coalition and artists from across the state to launch the "Million Plates Campaign for the Arts," a campaign dedicated to raising money to fund the California Arts Council's hundreds of programs across the state. Even in difficult economic times, the arts are essential. Our economy relies on creative minds, artistic organizations and innovative workers and there is something each Californian can do to turn this around.

Plus, the Arts Plates are now tax deductible. All fees for the Arts Plate are considered a charitable contribution to the California Arts Council. Businesses and residents looking to support arts statewide now have an extra incentive to support California arts - and have a cool looking license plate as well.

The plate's image, titled "Coastline," was created in 1993 by California artist Wayne Thiebaud. Since the Arts Plate first went on sale in 1994 it has raised over $20 million for California arts through sales and renewals. Currently over 60% of the California Arts Council’s budget comes from the Arts Plate.

LOCAL BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TURN-OUT TO SUPPORT THE ARTS
and PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS

Sacramento, CA- In challenging times, all businesses work to maintain visibility in the public eye. Doing so is critical to survival. This is particularly true in the non-profit arts sector and the motivation behind a new series of public service messages produced by the Friends of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

The PSAs are part of the Arts Commission’s ARTS. OPEN DAILY awareness campaign that launched late last year and will continue for the next several years. These new video messages focus on the tremendous community support, economic impact and general need for the arts in Sacramento.

The PSAs feature business leaders, such as Matt Mahood of Sacramento Metro Chamber, Linda Cutler of GenCorp; Michael Ault of Downtown Sacramento Partnership, and Sid Garcia-Heberger of Crest Theatre; heads of social service organizations and schools such as Beth Hassett of WEAVE, Dr. Shana Henry of Edward Kemble Elementary School and Derrell Roberts of the Roberts Family Development Center, as well as  leaders in the arts community such as Maestro Michael Morgan of Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, Stephanie Gularte of Capital Stage and Lial Jones of Crocker Art Museum.

Each statement communicates a clear understanding of how important the arts are to our quality of life, to our neighborhoods, schools and communities, and to the local economy.

It is Friends of the Arts Commission's position that continued public funding of the arts is critical. Chair of the Arts Commission and Board member of Friends of the Arts Commission Dan Gorfain states that "For over 30 years, the Arts Commission has been the foundational support of the arts, providing amazing resources to hundreds of artists, schools and organizations. Our grantees leverage small dollars into outreach programs for the disadvantaged and our youth."

Friends of the Arts Commission Board Chair Jan Geiger states that the Arts Commission's grantees are helping at-risk parents to get their kids to attend school, to avoid gangs, and helping our seniors lead healthy lives."  Commissioner Cheryl Holben says "First we created our online event calendar, which went from 600 hits the first month to 3.7 million hits twelve months later.  Now, with these ‘ARTS. Open Daily’. PSAs, how can we ignore the tangible value every strata of our community places on the arts?”

Due to continued economic challenges, the Arts Commission is facing further cuts by the City and County, already having absorbed a 50% cut over 2 years. "As the public arm for the arts, the Arts Commission is fulfilling its mission of advancing community through arts and culture." says Rhyena Halpern, Executive Director of the agency. Chair Gorfain: “We have a mayor who places very high priority on the arts.  have heard him say at multiple For Arts' Sake meetings that he wants to augment and support the Arts Commission’s work. He recognizes our importance in the community. “

The PSAs can be viewed by going to: Sacramento365.com's YouTube page
(and clicking on Uploads, should you not see all ten PSAs).

In a commissioned Arts Commission Economic Impact Study (2001) research showed that the arts, with its related industries, impacted the region by $350 million; contributed $1.35 million in local tax revenues, and was undercapitalized by 2.8 million annually. The 2010 National Arts Index of the Americans for the Arts, found that as of January 2008, Sacramento is home to 1515 arts-related businesses that employ 7061 people.
