Fiscal Sponsorship Application FinFriends of the Arts Commission’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program provides selected fiscal services to arts groups and individual artist projects that have a non-profit purpose and/or are looking at becoming their own tax exempt non-profit organization.

A fiscal sponsor (sometimes called a fiscal agent) is an organization that will receive tax-deductible contributions and agrees to accept, and be responsible for, charitable gifts on behalf of a project that does not have its own tax exemption. Using a fiscal sponsor, a non-exempt individual, project, event, or organization can take advantage of a lot of the benefits of a tax exempt nonprofit organization.

To qualify for the Friends’ Fiscal Sponsorship Program, individuals and organizations must:

  • Fit with the mission of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) – Advancing community through arts and culture.
  • Be artist-led or directly serve artists.
  • Be based in, or produce work in, the Sacramento region.
  • Apply funds raised toward non-profit purposes. Funds may not be used for the purpose of influencing legislation, such as funding lobbying. (NOTE: this applies to the use of the funds themselves and does not prevent sponsored organizations from doing general advocacy, either on behalf of their organization or of the arts in general.)
  • NOT be organized in a for-profit business structure (LLC, S-Corp, etc.).
